Chansansan Scenic Backway south of Jamestown

The Chansansan Scenic Backway

The smell of warm pavement and prairie grasses through your car window, the beautiful vista of the James River snaking along the river valley, scattered wildflowers below and the expansive North Dakota sky above, wildlife, historical places—these and so many more are the reasons you’ll love The Chan SanSan Scenic Backway.

Chansansan is the Yanktonai Sioux name for the James River. This 35-mile drive will take you through a valley carved out long ago by glacial meltwater. The drive boasts the 1968 Heinrich-Martin Dam picnic and recreation area, the historical LaMoure County Courthouse, the Toy Farmers Museum, and Red Wing Paddleboat.
